AUGUST 4 & 5 – COLOGNE (KÖLN)

• Cologne is Germany’s fourth largest city. It’s very famous for its Cathedral (Dom) which towers over the city and the River Rhine runs through the centre. I think the Rhine is following us!
• The Gay Games were out in full force so I got to see some of our Aussie swimmers compete in their races. It was nice to be a spectator although I did want to get in and compete! The general vibe is what I remember from Games I attended in Montreal and Melbourne – everyone is out to race well, AND THEN party. All the volunteers seem to be out drinking out every night.
• Here’s a beer drinking tip in Cologne – they have a local beer called Kölsch and if you have this beer, any bartender in town will keep refilling your glass and mark how many you’ve had on your beer coaster. It is a tradition that anyone drinking Kölsch NEVER has an empty glass. They only way to stop any bar tender from continuing this tradition is to put your beer coaster on top of your glass, or collapse off your bar chair.
• We did a ferry ride up the Rhine River which gives you a much better sense of the city and the beautiful buildings that define Cologne.
• All in all, Cologne has a great vibe and I would definitely return.
