AUGUST 1, 2 & 3 – HEIDLELBERG

• Heidelberg is one of the few cities that weren’t demolished in the war ... so, unlike Munich; the architecture remains very much pre-war and is a beautiful link between Gothic and Renaissance.
• The old part of the town is very long and narrow and feels like a very large village. The feeling is quite lovely when you walk into the old town and if feels like everyone knows each other (although they don’t). This feeling was explained to me by an Italian man in Munich who said, “A village is where you walk into your local delicatessen and the shop owner knows which sort of ham you want”. Very true!!
• Heidelberg Castle towers over the old town like it’s keeping a careful eye on everyone.
• Went to the outdoor pool and had a swim today which felt like swimming in a morgue – it was absolutely freezing!!!
• Off to Cologne tomorrow for 2 days which will be great!
