JULY 4 – BONJOUR PARIS

• After a mishap getting started (we needed to rise by 6.15 am to get to a tour to see Monet’s house – and my mother set the alarm for 4.30 am by mistake – arrrgghhh), we set off for a wonderful day.
• Giverney is a beautifully inspirational village and it’s no wonder Monet did amazing work here. The gardens (which were tended to by his two children and 6 of his second wife’s children) are magical. The house was absolutely huge for its day and his two studios have the most amazing natural light I’ve seen anywhere.
• From here, we took a bus to Fourges for lunch (the restaurant was and old water mill) and the food and wine were just lovely.
• The afternoon saw us land at the Palace of Versailles which was mind blowing to say the least. I had heard it was magically opulent but that doesn’t even describe it. Filled with beautiful art, and surrounded by amazing formal gardens, you could easily spend several days here exploring (if you can hack the summer crowds that is).
• Last night, after a couple of beers at home, we went to a beautiful restaurant for dinner and it was worth every Euro spent ... and we spent quite a few!
